Naveria, One Year Later

Three hundred and sixty-six days ago today, the Grand Duchy of Navārdia declared independence from the United States of America. Now known as the Commonwealth of Naveria, the state has grown from a backyard egostan to a genuine movement spanning three continents, eight territories and twenty-one people. Despite many hardships, particularly in the era after the dissolution of the Phoklandian Free State, the people and government of Naveria have persevered to keep the nation and its community alive and well. Today, as citizens celebrated across Naveria, politicians began to consider the next year of governance.

Navārdia initially consisted of one individual, the Grand Duke Casper. It gained its first naturalized citizens in October of 2019, and continued regularly growing with only two major slumps. The latest citizens include residents of the Special Administrative Regions of Kusini and New Santiago, through the Administrative Citizens Act introduced in parliament last month; and popular micronationalist Zarel Smith, who was naturalized last week. Possible future citizens include members of the extended royal family, interested individuals in the Orbly-Sabiland region and former Phoklandian citizens.

The original territory of the nation was called the Province of Capital, now called the Parish of Orbly. The next territory annexed by the nation was called Todge, and consisted of a small area of woodland in Kentucky. (The claims to Todge and a second territory called Little Formentera have since been rescinded.) The latest territories of Naveria include the Kusini SAR and the March of Sabiland, the latter of which was annexed as a mandate in early May. Annexations of more land have been considered by the government of Naveria, and these lands could be enclaves of the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom and India.

The first nation to establish mutual recognition with Navārdia was the State of Unicornia, which later became the New Santiago SAR due to political troubles and a large reliance on Navārdia and later Phokland. Since November of 2019 and excluding the period of Phoklandian rule, Naveria has regularly gained and granted recognition of nations around the world. Vishwamitra and the Confederate States are among the latest of the twenty-four nations to partake in diplomatic relations with Naveria. Potential future allies include East Kapreburg and members of the Antarctic Micronational Union and Commonwealth of Sayvillian Regions. A treaty has been signed with the Kingdom of Hrafnarfjall, but is not yet in effect.

The government structure of Naveria has remained consistent since its foundation as the Grand Duchy, but has become more detailed and structured. Parliament consists of representatives from every parish in the nation and one representative of the relatively large nonresidential population, ministries and commissariats have been formed to carry out executive duties and no judicial system exists at present due to the lack of an apparent need for such a system. In addition, each type of territory in Naveria has a unique government system, and many local leaders are beginning to utilize their constitutional powers. Future government endeavors could include a new coronavirus relief plan, the creation of a New Virginia-like canton system and the continued expansion of the July 2020 Constitution of the Commonwealth.

The festive events on this grand holiday were rather basic. A small feast was coordinated in Orbly by the royal family. Members of the Sabilandian, Kusinin and Rhyrodesian populations decorated the headquarters of their local governments and called the office of the Monarch to express their jubilation. Nonresidential citizens celebrated independence day in their own ways in the United States and the United Kingdom, two larger nations which do not recognize Naveria. A ceremony for the bestowing of titles and chivalric orders was planned for today, but is being rescheduled for another date due to a delay in the completion of relevant legislation. The Orblian Observer will prepare a full report when the ceremony is completed.

We here at the Orblian Observer apologize for our inconsistent posting schedule. A new schedule has been proposed, including the regular release of smaller newsbites and large newsletter releases every three to four months. We will be dedicating our energy to fulfilling this new schedule in the future. Stay tuned.
